Self Defense Classes for Property Management Companies

As part of our mission to reach out to the community, our instructors are brought in to help teach corporations and organizations self-defense techniques and empowerment. These courses are usually taught during lunch and focus on basic techniques to teach individuals to be more aware of their surroundings, how to use their voice and basic self-defense techniques to deal with worse case scenarios. The short courses help not only help establish confidence when dealing with difficult situations, but also helps establish team building in a safe environment with experienced instructors.

Here’s what Dalton Management had to say about us:

To whom it may concern,

The Tulen Center taught an amazing personalized self-defense class to 35 people in our company. Mas Goeroe Silvia Smart, 6th degree black belt, met with our Safety Committee ahead of time to learn what was important to the group and then built the self-defense class around those ideas.

In property management we are often in situations where we are alone with people we don’t know in empty apartments or working alone in offices. It was helpful to have a class geared specifically towards dealing with these scenarios as well as tools that our team can use in other areas of their lives. Silvia Smart and Eric Gorman gave us positive, encouraging instruction while boosting our self-confidence.

Our group ranges in age from 26 years old to 65 years old with varying degrees of physical limitations and disabilities. Some people were nervous about practicing in front of co-workers and concerned about their physical abilities, but quickly warmed up to the relaxing atmosphere at the school. The instructors encouraged questions and participation and led the class in a way that kept the team interested and involved. It didn’t take too long before people were firing off questions and getting excited to participate in the training. As a supervisor, it was great to have the entire team in one room without having to isolate certain people by physical ability.

In the end we had an incredible instruction session and a memorable team building experience. Silvia is already working with us to help build on the class for next year.

I am thankful for the instructors at the Tulen Center and the instruction that they offered to our company.

Sincerely,

Rebecca Cook Property Manager

We recently taught a three-part self-defense class at HDR, an Engineering Firm in Portland, through their safety committee. Here is what they had to say about it:

August 15, 2014

To whom it may concern,

Silvia Smart, director of the Tulen Center, and her colleagues recently delivered a 3-part self-defense class to several people in our office. Silvia’s experience and foresight ensured that time spent in each class was maximized and rewarding. Although some topics associated with self-awareness/assessment and self-defense can be uncomfortable, Silvia ensured the atmosphere was conducive to learning and that students were focused while executing self-defense methods.  Students were encouraged by Silvia to have open discussion of experiences and she continually reinforced previous lessons learned. Silvia effectively facilitates conversation and leads students to think about self-defense in a multi-faceted way.  I would recommend scheduling Silvia in to teach self-defense to any group, young or old, male or female.

Sincerely,

HDR Engineering, Inc.

Jennifer Maze

Office Safety Coordinator

It’s hard to deny Silvia’s passion for what she does.
