Through an invitation from the HR department, we recently taught a three-part self-defense class at Dr. Martens USA HQ in Portland. Here is what they had to say about it:
Dear Future Tulen Center Business Partners,Successful businesses create engagement through building a community within their workforce. The Tulen Center has been a key partner to Dr. Martens AirWair USA in fostering essential components of community. That of safety and well-being.The Tulen center conducted a series of training courses for our staff that combined lecture, storytelling, demonstration, and both physical and verbal participation. It was so satisfying to hear my fellow Dr. Martens’ employees talk about how the training increased their confidence and sense of empowerment. The trainings were a great value for the time. And, they were a lot of fun! I’d recommend the Tulen Center to any business looking to invest in the physical and mental well-being of their teams.Best,

Here are a few comments from some of the participants:
- I feel more confident that I will be prepared in a self-defense situation.
- By attending this class my awareness has gone to another level.
- My favorite thing was learning how to defend against an attacker.
- The teacher was wonderful!
- I appreciated the combination of talk and action.
- My favorite thing was realizing how much power we actually have, and how I can defend myself if I really need to.
As part of our mission to reach out to the community, our instructors are brought in to help teach corporations and organizations self-defense techniques and empowerment. These courses are usually taught during lunch and focus on basic techniques to teach individuals to be more aware of their surroundings, how to use their voice and basic self-defense techniques to deal with worse case scenarios. The short courses help not only help establish confidence when dealing with difficult situations, but also helps establish team building in a safe environment with experienced instructors.
Here’s what Dalton Management had to say about us:
To whom it may concern,
The Tulen Center taught an amazing personalized self-defense class to 35 people in our company. Mas Goeroe Silvia Smart, 6th degree black belt, met with our Safety Committee ahead of time to learn what was important to the group and then built the self-defense class around those ideas.
In property management we are often in situations where we are alone with people we don’t know in empty apartments or working alone in offices. It was helpful to have a class geared specifically towards dealing with these scenarios as well as tools that our team can use in other areas of their lives. Silvia Smart and Eric Gorman gave us positive, encouraging instruction while boosting our self-confidence.
Our group ranges in age from 26 years old to 65 years old with varying degrees of physical limitations and disabilities. Some people were nervous about practicing in front of co-workers and concerned about their physical abilities, but quickly warmed up to the relaxing atmosphere at the school. The instructors encouraged questions and participation and led the class in a way that kept the team interested and involved. It didn’t take too long before people were firing off questions and getting excited to participate in the training. As a supervisor, it was great to have the entire team in one room without having to isolate certain people by physical ability.
In the end we had an incredible instruction session and a memorable team building experience. Silvia is already working with us to help build on the class for next year.
I am thankful for the instructors at the Tulen Center and the instruction that they offered to our company.
